Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

"Yes, but I am also not the 'be on vacation' sort, and yet here I am," Celestia said, gesturing to the dim kitchen.

"Even on vacation!" Trunks shot back gamely, adding the juice from the oranges, along with a bit of spice. Salt, pepper, pinch of ginger, pinch of paprika. Not much of any of it really, just enough to taste--since the juice was the main sugar component. Letting that simmer and saute. Then turning off the heat, adding it over the spinach in bowls, and heading back out to join Celestia.

Simple snack-salad with carrots and yellow pepper, spinach, sunflower seeds, and mandarin slices.

"Seriously, just having a restless night?" Gentle concern, but honest too.

Celestia licked her lips at the sight of the salad, though her delight diminished a little at his question.

"If I am being truthful? I miss my sister very much."

"Ah." A sympathetic smile, as Trunks could sympathize. And empathize, to a degree--since he had some memories of his life now. Besides just the obvious, that he missed Mai. A lot. "She was like your counterpart, in some ways right? I can imagine whenever you were restless she was a comfort."

Because he did understand.

"Very much so. She was lost to me for a very, very long time, and we were only recently reunited... so to be missing her again feels like a terrible weight."

She was honest about such things with Trunks, as she was with few others. It was only fair. She had to coax him to unburden himself to her, so to not return the favor would be capricious if not cruel.

"She is the Princess of the Night, so the night is hardest."

He appreciated her honesty, and did his best to give it in return. Even if he was quieter and more prone to brooding than when he'd first arrived with others, she'd become his friend early. Quiet now while he had some of the salad, choosing his words.

"It's...I mean, I can't claim it's the same. But I understand. Before I had my memories, Mai and I would often sit out late at night under the stars. I know she'd had a really hard life, before becoming a Goddess, and that it was a relaxing change of pace for her. When I first recovered some of my memories, we'd go do that again when I had nightmares... Sometimes we'd go flying, sometimes we'd just stay on the grounds."

Nights were still hard, even though Celestia had done everything she could for him, and he was truly grateful.

"She was a good friend to you." And more, Celestia was convinced, after hearing him talk about her as he had. "And it is harder on you, when you have never really had the chance to remember losing people, and how you dealt with that, before."

It's a bit of a sad laugh, and rueful smile. "True--and the I gained a memory of losing at least one person, among other memories. I'm not sure if that's more or less painful." Gohan--not the Gohan here. But Gohan all the same--lying in a puddle in the rain, like so much discarded debris. The emotions...

After regaining that memory, and having some entirely reasonable anger at certain people, Trunks understood some of why Mai (and at least one other) was protective of him in him in turn. He'd been happier in ignorance.

"I'll manage though. I seem to be good at that, at least." Yep--soldiering on through it. "I have a good purpose here, and I'm not alone--I have good friends, including my current Goddess." The smile is somewhat more genuine.

"That's true. You are not alone, Trunks," Celestia said, smiling over a bite of salad. "It is all right to grieve, but never forget the joy you had from knowing those you have lost, or let that loss blind you to what you still have."

Which brings a genuine chuckle. "Spoken like a wise Goddess with centuries of experience, oh Princess." Teasing her, but at least a little less sad. "I was actually gonna go look at the stars, when I heard the noise in the kitchen. If you're still restless, you could join me?"

"I think I would like that, actually. Having company would be a good reminder of everything I just said." Which she needed help with on occasion, she was not too proud to admit.

"Good thing I went light on the snack then." He was glad she enjoyed it too--even before the conversation turned serious, he'd caught that. "...if it'll help, I could even be in my vessel-form. You can laugh at me flailing over my wings still."

Something he was still trying to get used to--and when he thought about, gave him trouble. When he just did, he had no trouble at all with them. He empathized with his friend Temeraire far more now...

Celestia giggled into a hoof slightly. "And here I was going to offer to shift myself, for the same reason in reverse."

"We can split the difference. Although I have yet to see you be anything but graceful while human. Unlike me, while a pony. I thought the TAIL would be what gave me trouble, not wings." He brightened when she giggled. Good, he was helping.

Whatever tangle of emotions there had been for Mai, there was also no doubt that some of the devotion was also to his Goddess, and helping to take care of her. Celestia was a similar tangle of emotions, with some differences, while now fulfilling that role. Which meant he did his utmost to be a good partner for her.

"What, I am a human and you are a pony?" Celestia had to giggle all the harder at that. She truly found him a delight and a pleasure to have around, and was very glad she had given him a name.

"That too, although I was thinking more pony here, and then maybe go to the near shore and explore a bit while human." Celestia was also one of the few whom he felt comfortable teasing. "I'd be honored by the company on a friendly night walk." With a wink--because he was teasing; not about being honored, but about any other implications.

"Oh, what an excellent idea! I would love that, all of it." Really, she never even got to do things like that in Equestria, so the opportunity was all the more welcome. "You are a fount of good plans!"

"...you're too kind to me, really." Trunks countered, with a hint of blush. "Lemme go do some pre-cleaning, and then we can do that."

"Then I will enjoy this excellent salad -- and then wash the bowl, and we shall go." The plan decided, she turned to her first part of it, with a will and a little haste.
